“Change Your Clock – Change Your Battery Campaign”
Posted on Friday November 01, 2019

The Whispering Pines Fire Rescue Department (WPFRD) is committed to a proactive approach to fire prevention and fire safety education.  Twice a year, the fire service uses Daylight Savings Time (DST) to promote the need to change your battery in your smoke alarm.  According to the United States Fire Administration, every year, approximately 2,600 Americans die in residential fires.  Approximately half of these deaths (52%) occur between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., when occupants are typically sleeping.

Smoke alarms save lives, prevent injuries, and minimize property damage by detecting fires early, alerting occupants, and allowing critical time for escape.  To diminish the possibilities of a significant fire event in our community, the WPFRD conducted a “Change Your Clock – Change Your Battery Campaign” on the Saturday, November 2, 2019, between 2:30pm to 4:30pm.  This endeavor involved us going door-to-door to contact residents to encourage and assist them with changing their smoke alarm batteries and educate them on the importance of a working smoke alarm.

As a result of our recent campaigns, we contacted hundreds of residents and assisted many of them with testing their smoke alarm, installing a battery, or installing a new smoke alarm, if necessary. Unfortunately, time constraints and the large quantity of homes preclude us from visiting every home.  However, the WPFRD has smoke alarm fact sheets available to residents and we are available to assist any resident with testing their smoke alarm at any time.  If you would like to receive a smoke alarm fact sheet or would like our assistance with your smoke alarm or any non-emergency fire safety issue, please contact us at 949-2400 or email [email protected].
